Children highly exposed to tobacco, survey shows

School-going children in Nairobi are highly exposed to tobacco products, a recently released survey shows.
According to Consumers Information Network survey report released yesterday, the sale of tobacco products around schools has seen a large percentage of children take up smoking and use of other forms of tobacco.
The research conducted in 112 schools around Nairobi in May last year reveals that 11.2 per cent of boys and 5.2 per cent of girls in day primary and secondary schools use tobacco on a daily basis. Addressing the press yesterday during the launch of the report, Institute for Legislative Affairs C.E.O Emma Wanyonyi urged the government to come up with stringent tobacco control measures to protect children from exposure.
“There is a major conflict between the public health sector and the objectives of tobacco industry
but when it touches on the lives of children, it now becomes a matter that will be detrimental
to the future economy and thus needs to be restrained,” she said
