The primary concern of the tobacco industry is making profit from its business while the principal objective of governments around the world is to protect and preserve the lives of citizens. These two objectives are irreconcilable so the tobacco industry uses numerous tactics to delay or block the adoption of strong measures to protect populations against the deadly consequences of tobacco.
Where the industry fails to block such policies, it does everything possible to weaken them to its advantage. Sometimes, when even this becomes impossible for the industry, it tends to out rightly ignore and go against these measures. These tobacco industry tactics are generally unethical and in most cases, unlawful.
