IILA has made significant strides that will have an impact on the country and the region. Under tobacco control for instance, we developed a comprehensive County Model Law on Tobacco Control, which localized best practices contained in both the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Kenya Tobacco Control Act (2007). This model law enabled IILA to venture into five counties, which served as a pilot in our engagement with county governments.
Additionally, IILA in collaboration with other partners initiated a campaign on prioritization of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and tobacco control in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kenya. Another milestone during this period was the successful launch of the Kenya Mental Health Policy 2015.
This has been a long journey which started in 2013 with IILA participating in the drafting and later advocacy for its adoption and passage. Moreover, the discovery of oil in Turkana opened a new frontier for IILA to engage in review and development of the policy framework on oil, gas and extractives sector in Kenya.
